Show Cause Hearing - Cambridge Exxon - Class “A” Beer License

A Show Cause hearing was held for William Gordy, trading as Cambridge Exxon due to a recent conviction for selling alcoholic beverages to a minor. Appearing before the Commissioners for Cambridge Exxon were William Gordy, owner; Amy Foxwell, Manager; Ellen Majeed, the employee who completed the sale of alcohol to a minor; and Brett Wilson, legal counsel for Cambridge Exxon. Appearing before the Commissioners on behalf of the County were Nick Lyons, Codes Administrator, and Deputy Paul Hurley. Commissioner Powell clarified that this is not the Exxon station owned by  Mr. Ray Crismond located on Route 50 West.  Mr. Merryweather questioned Mr. Lyons and established that Cambridge Exxon had been convicted of selling beer to minors in September 1997.  Mr. Wilson stated that Cambridge Exxon does not dispute the conviction.  Pursuant to a question from Commissioner Powell, Officer Hurley stated that Cambridge Exxon had been investigated four previous times and had four prior convictions.  Mr. Wilson stated that Ms. Majeed did check the cadet’s identification, became confused and made a mistake.  Mr. Gordy explained that Ms. Majeed’s employment had been terminated as a result of this incident and explained steps that have been taken to avoid future violations.  After hearing all testimony, the Commissioners adjourned to consider the matter.
